HOW I GOT A BATMOBILE CHAPTER TWO: CLOSE, BUT NOT QUITE!
For the next nine years I searched for anything close to the Batmobile. In the early eighties, one of my first jobs was a tour guide at Universal when Knight Rider was still in production. I got to be a Battlestar Galactica Warrior for the tour, and was also the voice of KITT as people got in and out of the car. I revisited my old friend with my little son years later.
Chris was my little bat-pal, and we had to go see the Batman stunt show at Six Flags three times, then the Batman ride, then the fireworks show. Mom rolled her eyes a lot that day! (NOTE: I thought the shot of me as ROBOCOP fit with the page of "close, but not quite" my friend Dave Theriault let me try it on!)
After working on Batman Forever (I created graphics for the bat-tube transport Val Kilmer used, as well as graphics for other scenes like when the Riddler's machine read Bruce Wayne's mind) The director gave me passes to go see the Batmobile at the Shrine! So Chris came along with the promise of a new batman toy, and stood for the camera again!
Chris again, as we visited a Keaton-mobile up for auction here in Los Angeles. This was purchased by magician David Copperfield, but then he returned it when he found out it wasn't screen used (and he couldn't use it in his show!)
This was one of my weirdest finds, at the Petersen Auto Museum. It was a Japanese coffin for A child! Creepy!!
I found a lot of home made batmo-things as the internet sped up my search. Here is a homemade Keaton car, and I guess he built it just by looking at photos! That is a LOT of work! My hat's off to all the scratch builders out there - I admire your guts and skills! (P.S. if you know the where abouts of any of these cars, send me an email!)
Here is a 1959 batmo-buick! After WayneTech stock crashed, batman had to adjust his budget!
Found this 1972 ??? on Ebay, it was listed several times, and I don't think it ever hit the seller's reserve. One man's dream car is another man's "What were you thinking?" Top honors for original design!
Apparently the reception in England is pretty bad, if the builder of this car thought he was building an Adam West style mobile!
This car is a pretty cool design, and I was impressed with the over all look. Unfortunately the word "Batmobile" seems to make owner's stretch the truth, and this car comes with a story about how it was used in the 50's for a Batman movie. Cool car, but never in a film.
This was last spotted in Alaska headed north! Someone had fun in a junk yard and pulled out with this unique vehicle!
Holy Bat-Prom-mobile! This was last seen in New York, made by a custom car company.
This was photographed in Japan, kind of a cross between the Westmobile, the Comic version of the car, and the Mach 5! "Quick Trixie, Spridel and Chim Chim have locked themselves in the bat-trunk!"
Wow. That's a lot of time, and a lot of work for.... well.... this uh..... kinda.... well it is real shiny! I would love to see this thing rolling!
Holy Main Street Electrical Light Parade of Gotham! Anyone know where this float appeared? Last time I checked Batman was one of the few famous characters NOT owned by Disney!
This car ws originally listed as an original Barris Batmobile at a Kruse Auction, so the answer is no, they don't do much research. Like looking at the car!
Another attempt by a scratch builder, with his own cave!
Well, the headlights look like the Futura headlights, and it is black....
This one was on EBAY, a hand made almost full sized mock up, non working, and it was out of wood! Now that's some big model car!
This was a Corvette that used to live near me in Southern Calif. that I tried to hire for Christopher's 5th birthday party, but he was booked. The builder sold it to a fellow in Texas where it lives with a replica of the Back to the Future car!
Finally, a batmobile that looks like the original! I hired Bob Butts to come be a part of an appearance of Adam West on the Home and Family Show (on the back lot of Universal once again!), and Bob brought one of his reproductions. This time my new son Nick and big brother Chris got to sit in the Batmobile! Bob gave me a black Batphone so I had my very first piece of the car! Next up, a trip to Bob Butt's Fantasy Cars Ranch rekindles the need for a car with an afterburner!
